ScreenUsed Live On-Line Auction Scheduled for March 9, 2013

Our first two auctions back in July and November 2012 were successful entries for us into this alternative to selling on our website. We will continue with our unique offering of both the website and auctions. We continue to post new items on the website 5 days a week, and based on feedback from consignors we may hold 3 to 4 auctions per year.

As mentioned before, we are filling a demand in the market for a mid-tier auction offering - not the million dollars per item level, nor the warehouse blowout level. We feel this auction has many cool items for collectors to add to their collections.

There are no reserves on our lots; the starting price is where the auction starts. Here are some highlights from the auction:

  • Army of Darkness - Stop Motion Miniature Deadite
  • AVP: Alien Vs. Predator - Facehugger Puppet
  • Big Lebowski, The - Maude's Painting Harness & Assistants' Boots
  • Blade Runner - Blade Runner Blaster and Deckard's Shirt (Harrison Ford)
  • Dark Knight, The - Joker's Glock Pistol and Knife (Heath Ledger)
  • Jaws - Quint's Machete (Robert Shaw)
  • Jurassic Park - Velociraptor Eggs
  • Rambo - John Rambo's Outfit (Sylvester Stallone)
  • Serenity - Mal's Shirt and Pants (Nathan Fillion)

  • The Thing - Production Used Clapperboard

When we announce the date, we'll get the word out in a newsletter emailed to all subscribers. During the next few months, we will start accepting consignments and will announce a cut-off date for those shortly.

    ScreenUsed Summer 2012 Auction Results

Over to the right is one of the banner ads for our first Live On-Line auction, which took place yesterday, July 21, 2012. We'll keep the banner ad here on the news page for posterity. It used to click through to the auction information when it was used on various websites.

In addition, we created a limited edition set of collector cards with some of the key pieces from the auction. We had some folks handing them out at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and we kept aside some sets for anyone that is interested on them while quantities last. (Sorry all sold out.) All of the proceeds go to charity - this year, we have selected the ASPCA.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the auction, and congratulations to the winners of various lots. We appreciate the nice comments and emails, and based on our results below we look forward to scheduling our next auction. For our first time out, we feel the auction went pretty well. We did not have an issue with a single piece in the auction, so we met our goals.

It seems a few people had some issues getting logged into iCollector, so I followed up with their tech support after the auction. They use Java in order to display the live auction, so customers will need to be up to date on their systems. They stated that the majority of the issues were related to systems that were not kept updated. So next auction, we'll see if there is a way to get folks on early and test things out somehow.

    Anyway, on to the results:

    • Of the 359 lots in the auction, 219 sold, making a sales rate of 61%
    • The average price per lot was $1086 (after buyers premium)
    • Total sales was $201,475 hammer price, $237,741 after buyers premium
    • The highest selling items (with buyers premium) were:

      • Original screen-used Rocketeer helmet from The Rocketeer - $29,500
      • Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi "Blue Harvest" clapperboard - $26,550
      • Original production-used Mattel Hoverboard from Back to the Future II & III - $22,420
      • Complete Will Farrell hero "Buddy" elf costume from Elf - $10,620

We will keep the auction catalog, update log, and prices realized on our website in an archive area for future reference. We look forward to setting a date for the next auction, in the mean time we have a lot of items to pack and ship.

      Thanks again for the support,

Successful Fundraiser for Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research

The booth at San Diego Comic-Con was continuously busy the entire show, every day. What we presented was a rare opportunity to see the screen used DeLorean Time Machine from the 3rd movie, along with several props and wardrobe from all three movies. It was a small museum display, bringing back memories for fans. For fans that helped out with the Team Fox cause with a donation of $20, they were allowed to very carefully sit in the Time Machine and have their picture taken. This was possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity for these fans. Through the generosity of the fans, Profiles in History, along with Oliver and Terry Holler from Team Fox, we raised $11,131.90 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. We also appreciate Claudia Wells, Jeffrey Weissman, and Billy Zane for signing autographs in the booth to help awareness. Thanks to everyone that stopped by to visit the booth, and we are excited to send the check to the Foundation.

So where is the Time Machine now? Well if you missed it at Comic-Con, and happen to be in the San Diego area, visit the San Diego Air & Space Museum where the Time Machine is on display until August 13th. It is located in front of their "SPACE: A Journey To Our Future" exhibition.

Next stop? Plans are coming together to exhibit the Time Machine near the Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance in Monterey, CA from August 14th through August 21st. So stay tuned.

      July 14, 2011

Back to the Future III Time Machine on Exhibition

This summer we will be exhibiting the Back to the Future III DeLorean Time Machine at several venues. Right now, it is on display at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in front of their "SPACE: A Journey To Our Future" exhibition. From July 19 through July 24 you can see the Time Machine at the Profiles in History booth at Comic-Con. We are working in conjunction with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research to provide a rare opportunity to (carefully) sit in the car and have a picture taken for a minimal donation, with all proceeds going directly to the Fox Foundation. After Comic-Con the Time Machine will return to the museum for a few more weeks on display.

So stop by to see us in booth 1605 if you are at Comic-Con, and check out our display of several props and wardrobe from all three Back to the Future movies. Below is a portion of the Profiles in History press release for the Comic-Con exhibit.

Los Angeles, CA - July 14, 2011 - Where are all the real DeLorean Time Machines that were used in the Back to the Future movies? Sadly, some of them no longer exist and others are in need of extensive work. Of the seven cars used over the three movies, only three original cars are thought to still exist. Presented by Profiles in History, the famed auction house that represented the Debbie Reynolds Collection this summer, one of those screen used DeLoreans will be at Comic-Con 2011 for public viewing in conjunction with Team Fox benefiting The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The main goal is to give fans the opportunity to see and be photographed in the car. For a $20 donation to the Foundation you can be photographed in the DeLorean with all proceeds going to Team Fox.

Profiles in History is proud to present the original DeLorean Time Machine driven by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future III. It will be presented at booth 1605, along with several original artifacts from all three Back to the Future movies with the hopes of creating a Back To The Future "museum" experience. Along with the Time Machine will be original costumes, the Tales From Space comic, Doc's burned toy Cadillac, Clock Tower cables, Gray's Almanac, the Doc Brown committed/commended newspapers, a full set of all five types of hoverboards, and other rarely seen pieces of cinematic history.

The Time Machine has been in private hands for the past 8 years, and was recently featured on the Hollywood Treasure television show hosted by Joe Maddalena. Joe and his staff will be at the booth in person to greet fans, and share these rare pieces of history. In conjunction with Team Fox, this is a rare opportunity to get your pictures taken with the original Time Machine.

The Time Machine will be available for viewing during advertised Comic-Con show hours, and will be in a future Profiles in History auction later this year, with a portion of the proceeds going to Team Fox benefiting The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Previously it could be seen at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Production Art Gallery combined with ScreenUsed

The Production Art Gallery website has been running since September 2009 as a separate entity. In order to make it easier for our customers, we have combined both sites together now under the original ScreenUsed.com site. You will still be able to find all of the available one-of-a-kind original production artwork on the new combined site - everything was moved over. We have added a new category on ScreenUsed called "Production Art", allowing searches that will select only art if you would like.

If you had any Instant Notification subscriptions on the Production Art Gallery site, they have been converted over to the new site, so you will still be sent automated emails and text messages when artwork from your favorite artists or movies is posted. As well, ScreenUsed customers will now receive notifications for original production art that matches their movie criteria.

      March 3, 2010

We now have a Make Offer feature available on certain items on the website. Look for items that have the blue button as seen in the picture to the side. THE LOST ART OF HOLLYWOOD ... FOUND

New virtual Film & TV production art gallery opens to celebrate a vanishing art form.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. - September 18, 2009. - Remember what the movie experience used to be like? The smell of popcorn wafting through the lavish lobbies. The walls adorned with beautiful posters promising a wonderful escape into a make believe world, the ushers, and the noisy projectors, feeding their magic of light and sound onto the screen. It made you feel like you had entered into a little piece of Hollywood itself. While watching the film you might ask, "Where did they get that?" or, "How did they come up with that?" or, "Who designed that beautiful dress?"

      Who makes this stuff?

The piece to the right, Indiana Jones head study, by Lawrence Noble

Well now you can find out. A new website, www.ProductionArtGallery.com, has found those unsung artists and craftsmen who created the posters, designed the sets and costumes, crafted the very look of the film, and through their art, delivered on the promise that only the magic of movies and television can offer. Many are still around. One thing is for sure, their art has been found and is now, for the first time ever, being offered on a site. And, its all for sale. Viewing the site is like walking into film history. Star Wars, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Flash Gordon, Lost in Space, and so much more. They are all represented through the gifted talents of artists like John Alvin, Lawrence Noble, David Edward Byrd, Chris Hopkins, Edith Head, Michael Hobson, Tim Flattery, Ron Croci, and Paul Zastupnevich.

Much of the artwork rendered since the early days of Hollywood, has been discarded and destroyed by studios, networks and advertising agencies, who were unaware, or under appreciative of the value of the art form. And in other cases, pieces have been missing or unidentified and spread all over the globe.

The piece to the left, from the movie Enchanted, by John Alvin

Now a new virtual on-line art gallery is open that specializes in celebrating the vanishing film & television production art form. This week, ScreenUsed (www.ScreenUsed.com), which brokers original movie & TV memorabilia, has launched the Production Art Gallery (www.ProductionArtGallery.com) , which it describes as: "The world's first virtual Art Gallery, solely dedicated to original film & television production artwork."

The Production Art Gallery website features never before seen, hand-rendered, original film & television artwork, including: concept art, storyboards, costume designs, matte paintings, blueprints/schematics, studio photographs, publishing & merchandising art, and rare advertising art; many rendered by some of Hollywood's most talented artists. Original art that is being featured in the preview opening of the website is dated from the 1960's to the present day.

"We have always felt this is a category of original film and television memorabilia that has not really gotten the full appreciation it's due.", said Desi DosSantos, ScreenUsed's co-founder and the curator of the site. "We have found original production art that has often been vastly underestimated in regard to its long term historical value, and are very excited to be promoting this important, lost art form".

"We also think the ever rising prices in the sale of original advertising art, book illustrations, fantasy and comic book art over the past decade are significant signs that there is great potential in the collecting of and investment worthiness of original film & television production art." DosSantos explained. "It's within reason to expect an original piece of film art to sell for over one million dollars in our lifetime. Artwork for a classic one-sheet movie poster might achieve that benchmark." DosSantos stated.

ScreenUsed.com version 2.0 is now online. We have updated the website based on customer feedback and requests.

      • INSTANT NOTIFICATION! - Once you have an account and login, you can sign up for automated e-mail and SMS mobile phone notification the instant an item is posted on the website that matches your criteria. You can select from any movie and/or any actor, along with narrowing that down to props, wardrobe, production items, or other. Lastly, you can type in a comment to assist in describing any particular item in more detail that you are looking for. All information is secure using our SSL connection (you will see a lock icon in your browser). Below is an example showing some active subscriptions.
      • CUSTOM DISPLAYS - ScreenUsed has a complete workshop for creating custom display cases for your props and wardrobe. Each display is uniquely styled to accommodate the individual prop or costume piece. The majority of our display cases can include printed screen captures if the movie is available on DVD, along with a custom descriptive plaque. Please view some of our past display cases in the Custom Displays section for examples, along with the Archive section of the website.
      • FORMAT and SORTING - When searching in Items For Sale, Archive, or the Private Collection, you now have additional abilities for formatting and sorting the display. First, we still have the GRID view that everyone is familiar with; in addition, there is a LIST view that allows you to see a text listing of the items. Sorting can be selected by Oldest, Newest, Movie Name A-Z or Z-A, along with Highest Price or Lowest Price. Select any of these settings then click the SEARCH! button.

BTTFprops.com and ScreenUsed.com join together. Brought together over the years by a shared interest in the Back to the Future trilogy, the owners of the two web sites decided to combine the display of their collections in one place. This idea started at the Back to the Future Exhibit displayed at the FX-2002 SciFi show in Florida. Both collections were displayed together and received positive compliments from those that attended. This size of display had never before been attempted for the Back to the Future trilogy. Through the years, they have built relationships with many collectors, property masters, weapons coordinators, crew members, and studio contacts.
